Imagine writing a letter that would still be read almost 2,000 years later! 

A man named Peter wrote such a letter to his friends who were followers of Christ in the first century. That letter is one of two written by Peter which are still studied today: 1 Peter and 2 Peter. (When we read the name of his letters aloud, we say, “First Peter” and “Second Peter.”) 

Peter was one of Jesus’ 12 special followers. When you read the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, Peter’s name shows up many times. We learn a lot about a younger Peter in the Gospels. But in this study, we read the words of an older Peter. He had learned much after following Jesus’ teachings for many years. Peter had wisdom to share as his life was nearing its end. 

The letter of 1 Peter was written to a group of churches in Asia Minor (modern day Turkey). It encouraged Christians who were suffering many trials because of their faith. Peter wanted them to remember that their faith in Jesus would give them strength to face those hard times. Suffering in this life would not last forever, but eternity with Jesus would be forever! 

For those who trust Jesus to forgive their sins, they will have eternal life with Jesus. Like those believers long ago, we can live lives that are Changed by Hope—and that hope is Jesus!
